Here is a website with supplementary exercises and links to other materials you may find useful in mastering the Hewitt material. You will need account information found inside your textbook to access it.

Exams

We will have 3 exams, dates listed below. (These dates are subject to change). You may bring to each exam one sheet of paper up to 8.5 x 11 inches, upon which you may write reminder formulas and notes. Save these sheets for use on the final exam. You will also need a simple calculator and several number 2 pencils with erasers. Note: you may need the Adobe reader software in order to use the pdf files listed below.

Exam Coverage (subject to modification if schedule requires it)

• All exams include Feynman readings as per handout, anything covered in class or assigned for outside activity as well as the following book sections:
• Feb 13: Chapters 1 through 4, plus Feynman readings Parts 1 and 2 .
• March 12: Chapters through 8, plus Feynman readings Parts 3 and 4.
• Apr 23, Chapters thru 26, plus Feynman readings Part 5.
• Note: answers to the exams just given will be linked here soon after the exam is over.

  Final Exam in Usual Classroom, beginning as per KU timetable

• The final exam will last for 90 minutes.
• Material on the final exam will come about half from material before the third exam, and about half from material covered since that exam.
• Final grades for the class will be posted with the Registrar as soon as available.

  Reading Schedule and Homework Assignments

  You should be reading the given chapter in the two weeks leading up to the homework due date. Here are homework assignments which should be completed by you on the date shown. I do not collect or grade homework. These are drawn from the TEXTBOOK. Answers will be posted and linked on or about that date. Ex refers to what the book calls "Exercises" and Pr to "Problems". It will also be very helpful to the the textbook website for the chapter. Note that additional assignments may be posted here from time to time. This schedule may be revised as the semester progresses.

  • Jan 30: We join the teach-in on global climate change with attention to the physics of greenhouse gas effects on the Earth's energy balance. In order to prepare for this class, please watch the quicktime video and read the essay below it on the web page linked here . You should also read the discussion on pp 317-318 of your text. With this background, next read the online essay by Hobson. One issue sometimes raised by those who oppose greenhouse gas limits is that plants grow faster with more carbon dioxide. This is a good example of true but misleading results. Read the Science News online story: particularly skip down to the section "Not the only issue", which includes a description of some experiments at Kansas State. We will follow this with a review of bogus journalistic "balance". Afterward, we will return to our work on mechanics.
